One of the interesting bits of research that we found was that a lot of people who liked our show on 91.3 didn't know about where to find Joe. Catch Joe's new show on Power 98 with Shareen Wong and Hossan Leong - weekday mornings 6-10am. Humbly put... it's gooder.

Super-busy radio slut asks… was it good for you?

8:36 pm Joe And Petrina's Blog

It’s amazing, but I have been SO busy that I haven’t had time to look after this blog. Just think of it as an untended bush (eek!). Recordings, meetings and unplanned-for naps (i.e. falling asleep at the desk/sofa/toilet/traffic-lights/etc).

So this will be quick as well – it’s 8:30 at night and I still have to do some more recordings after this.

Have you guys heard the show yet? (I know, kan-cheong spider, right? Second day, already want to know…)

Oh and for those of you who caught it, this is the game that Hossan and Shareen were trying to win at today. Please turn down the volume in the office before you play… Unless your office is VERY cool. Check out…. PUZZLEFARTER!!!

    Hey Joe,

Two days into the show and it’s great. Hossan a bit held back lah – but the banter is fantastic – you guys catch each other’s drift really quick. i couldn’t stop chuckling to myself…

    Keep it up!
loving it and lapping it all up. Shareen is a hoot too!

    Hey Joe,

Haven’t had much of a chance to listen to the show – but loved your rendition of “Superwoman” with Hossan backing.

Looking forward to more good times and a much improved morning commute!

Hi Joe, I’ve heard your show this morning. Glad to hear your voice on air again, you are great, same as usual but I do not like the other two DJs, Shareen And Hossan who co host with you on the Morning Jam. They are worse than Sheikh Haikel and Power98 music isn’t great at all as compared to 91.3FM. So sorry Joe, it would be great if you and Petrina could return back to 91.3FM. Your were just perfect. Sad to say, its impossible. I really miss your games like “psychic powers” and “Petrina’s Always Right” and many more. I will continue to support you by tuning in to the Morning Jam. Do your best to build up the chemistry between the other two DJs.

    piang, 3 mins, still KLKK.

jump, no gas. can’t go anywhere else.

tsk, ‘no gas run’. give up.

    about the show:

yes, i’m also catching v little of the show, due to exhaustion taking its toil in the morning. BUT, rain or shine, the dial is on.

so far, good, enjoyin it. other than megaloads of ads, and tonnes of songs, leavin v little room for discussion. for 3 pple, it’s a squeeze.

but things will take time to get used to. just like how Joe have to change his habit of sayin the program and co-hosts’ name.

man, this morn was a _real_ close shave. heh.

    and,

    MORNING JAM != MORNING SHOW.

maybe time to find a new name, like ‘A New Morning w Sunshine, Happiness and Joy’ or something. heh.

when joe and petrina teamed up, i felt the same. cos i also rooted for joe and maggie. it took me a year or so to get used to the whole chemistry.

as things go along, you probably will.

hossan isn’t bad, he improved lots since the old days. maybe it took a while for him to find the gap between a performing artiste and DJ. it was my wife who exposed me to his talents. he’s really great onstage.

i feel he and shareen are way better than that ‘rapper’ shiekh.

Hey joe, its nice to hear you back on radio. Do you think you could do anything about the long adverts and music? It feels like I have to wait so loong for the adverts to end to hear you all talk… And most of the songs I haven’t heard of before. I’m actually quite torn toggling between the two stations, trying to catch you guys/gal talking, and the music on 91.3 (just the music nothing else lor). Apart from that your show is gr8 as always!

  7. NanceNIcky :

I concur with small girl. Too many ads, and the bantering aint enuf. But I’m still adjusting to you teaming with Hossan and Shareen. Missed Petrina badly… and her wacky games. But have to move on.

3 days into the show..i must conclude that it was NOT a dissappointment!Indeed it was entertaining and hilarious to listen to! I think U guys go along well in chemistry! Music is much better to wat that station?..coz it has got 80’s grrovvvve! LOL!..

I agree with small girl..TOO MANY ADVERTS!!…arrrr..making it a pain to wait for u guys & the music to come back on…

Anyway, i think this SLUT could do a more nasty show than these….

yes chemistry between the DJ takes time. It is never easy. Same as what HDBanger said, i was missing Joe and Maggie when Joe went to 91.3. I was channel surfing between 98 and 91.3 then. But Joe won hands down what to do and I had to sacrifice 98 Maggie and Hossan .

    1. i like the songs, actually perfer them to 91.3
    2. i dun really like Hossan on radio, prefer him in acts. He is still not talking much, just laughing off most of the time
    3. Shareen is good, she catch on to joe and is quick in expressing her views. But i still miss petrina so much…
    4. and i confirmed: Joe Augustine is the best i can find on air…

ps. i dun mind the advert so much becos i used that time to chat with my hubby … but i will hate it if i am driving alone

I like the new show – it’s hilarious. Joe, don’t worry, the new trend is for the guys to end up with the pink drinks (with the cherry, no less) : )

But have to agree that there are too many ads/music. Actually, from what I heard of Hossan last week, I felt he has a lot to offer (not having tuned in before to P98 before this). It’s a shame to just hear him doing traffic only this week. You need more airspace to fit the clever conversations that all 3 of you are capable of having.

    1) Do something totally outrageous every each other day, it does not matter which DJ does the feat. Eg, Like JOE got his eye-brows trimmed and waxing done LIVE.

    2) Since Hossan is a comedian/actor/singer all round into one, why not have some contest that let your listeners to “out-sing” Hossan..or maybe Shereen..& let JOE be the critical “ken lee” judge..? (but bear in mind that the judge will always says the contestant always win)

    3) Well, sometimes i wish my spouse could read my mind…have telepathy!..so that by just “ggleaning” my husband in the eye (eye contact)…he knows wat i am thinking! Viola! lets have a game with the djs, called “what is on my mind?”…

Great to hear your voice on radio again Joe! However, takes a little getting used to the 3 of you. Cannot beat Petrina & you – the best ever!

I agree – a bit too many commercials and songs and not enough talking. Not crazy about the 80s songs – prefer 91.3’s.

  19. mummyji :

actually i beg to differ from smallgirl. I think the songs played are nicer on Power, which I haven’t tuned in to for like eons.. this morning there was Sting & Mika! I dun remember 91.3 ever playing sting.
Shareen & Hossan sound way better then those 2 with same initials in the other show…. some people just don’t have a radio voice nor speak clearly enough.

listened to 91.3 this morning, with Elliot back on air actually they sounded better (kept sheikh from speaking too much)

listened to 98, felt like Hossan doesnt speak as much as Joe and Shereen is hogging the mic. Dont get me wrong, Hossan ruled the morning show on 98 when Joe and Shereen was not there, so it does feel a bit strange when he has lesser airtime to talk now

  23. Pappaquins :

    Date: June 26, 2008 @ 11:59 am

I think Home Improvements is on to something with giving Hossan perhaps dedicated airtime during the show – maybe call it “Leong Thoughts” or something where it’s essentially him telling the audience his views on Singaporeanisms.

Also, maybe you guys can take turns doing the traffic – each with your own personality?

It’s just that you and Shareen are like a couple of long-lost chums and poor little Hossan seems a little left out – although I did notice today that you were trying to draw him into the knitting circle.

Joe, can I make a suggestion? News are always followed by something about the SAF, interview or such. Yes, it’s a SAFRA radio station thus featuring smthg abt SAF. Here’s what I thought is nice. Interview some individuals from various profession, get them to the station once a week to talk abt things. It can be part of education, part of learning more, etc.

Coming to the chemistry, I like Joe & Petrina over Joe & Maggie. The chemistry w Shareen and Hossan is building. Hossan is a typical local boy, which is good (just like Petrina was e local gal on radio). Keep it up! Hossan’s bitching is quite candid. Heard him talking abt the chinese gal in front of his door part. Local talk is good than some wannabes over at the other station.

    Hello, Kan-Cheong Spider,
I have 2 comments to share, make you sleep better:
    1. You are born to be a DJ. A natural! You are good either with 91.3, 98 or 55.9. It is just tired for us to change station every month.
    2. 91.3 is going back Ah beng style in the morning. Big loss for that station.

    Happy?

  28. Lee AhSeng :

    Date: June 29, 2008 @ 3:09 pm

Joe, I think when you are really friends with someone, the audience can sense the chemistry and the wise and witty barbs just comes naturally….that is the case with you and Petrina….

Right now, the chemistry with Hossan is still not at that “friends” stage…with Shareen its ok but i still dun find her as the fun loving type character of a Petrina or Maggie.

But then again these things takes time (not too long though i hope)…definitely improving day by day though…and i always think 3 deejays bantering is better than two….so I expect better shows ahead….with your talents & Hossan”s, i am sure of it….

I agreed w Lee AS, Hossan like not himself leh. He is a very funni guy but somehow he seem to respect U too much lah…therfore holding too much. Shareen is ok but she is just not the fun type, she can never b as crazy as Maggie, Petrina n Denise.

YES, the HK traffic man is back. Heard it at abt 8.35am traffic. Joe, that’s ur trademark in Power 98, and we like it.

And Yes, the reception in the East is terrible. I am now tuned to my CD till I enter the ECP.

  32. radiogaga :

Caught the show this morning and I change station after 5 minutes. Here’s why:

    1) Nobody tunes in to radio station to listen to songs these days. there are multi disc CD changer, 100G MP3 players that stores a lifetime of music and songs, etc. The DJs makes or break the station, not the music.

    2) Nobody tunes in to a radio to listen to endless commercials. Any commmercials that takes more than 10 seconds, you lose the listerner.

    3) Every other station does traffic report. Tell us something we don’t know.

    4) Forget about teasers. Every station is doing likewise and it gets annoying. You want to say or do something, just do it. If the listener miss it, too bad. This way, they will really stay tune and not station surf.

    5) Lastly, don’t try too hard. It’s gets pretty obvious that Hossan & Shareen are trying to catch up with Joe.

    Hope this helps.

  33. here comes my morning fix :) :

    @radiogaga:

1)i only agree with you on tt pt wrt morning shows. without radio, you wldn’t know what new music is out there, or reminisce old forgotten songs…

2)on-air commercials is one of the way radio stations make money. more commercials = more chance of our fav djs being able to keep their jobs.

3)if you dont channel-surf, then you wld obviously want the station you’re on to report on traffic, unless there is a alternate station that is solely devoted to road traffic in sg…

4)teasers: in e creative industry, teasers are the most fun to do. and they give top of mind recall in comsumers, with the least effort. so there..

5)well at least they’re trying hard… lol. gotta admit that sometimes chemistry aint something tt is spot on… it needs effort and time to work itself out…

end of the day, all i wanna say is, this trio has a great potential ahead of them. just give them some time…

    gambate!!

I have a question and this relates to your entries a few eons ago when you asked us for a favour – so now that you’re there and beating gongs and all, I’m still not sure what the favour is?

Actually Joe, maybe you should start a Morning Jam blog so that we can transfer our affections to your current show?

You know what I thought was pretty funny – when you had Gurmit on yesterday and you guys were talking about David Caruso. It’s so on the money – perhaps that’s what we’re missing here in crime-solving, proper posing into the sunset and better diction when it comes to names… Maybe you guys can have a call every day with different local celebrities to find out what they’re up to – whether they’re up even? That’s definitely something that’s not done yet …

Lastly, do we say goodbye to Petrina now that you’re on the air? Realise that she could either be
    1. Completely dehydrated from all that sweating out
    2. Stuck in a strange position with all the contorting
    3. Out there fighting with all the other weekday shoppers for the best value loo-rolls

At the risk of sounding like a needy fan stalker person, just noticed that she’s completely fallen off the blog since you came back on air.

er, isn’t that the blog they’re on now?

    guys,

maybe rest of us can suggest things, which they can work on. i can’t seem to come up with somethin for hossan, given his talents. his thai-style traffic report will be good tomorrow (get some thai music, man, like those used in contender asia). don’t want him to stretch too much too, cos he needs his juices as well for his own shows at the esplanade. maybe some role-play stuff. 3 fellas act out some wierd storylines, build it as it develops or something.

shareen and joe can rib each other every other day (like how shareen kena choc mint today). or can do some q&a game. harry does a great job with ‘nearly impossible’ trivia.

    to joe,

i find that sometimes when you guys talk about something interesting, the three of you start shooting off real fast, and listeners may find it hard to pick the discussion thread. 3 djs sharing the same airspace, with limited time due to ads, and more music, makes it uncomfy for us who used to listen to you and petrina. i think this is the crux of the matter… ’nuff said. you’ll figure out what needs to be done :)

  39. Rene :

    HI Joe,
I have been listening to your show on Power98, and well here is what i honestly think, and its jus my 2 cents worth. In the first place Hossan and Shareens’ show was weak to begin with. I guess its the show format as comparing to what u did with Petrina on 91.3 i think u guys had a better format in terms of the stuff u talked about, and seriously even that u have joined them its just not entertaining for me anymore. I guess its the chemistry that you have/dont have with them and i thnk Hossan in all honesty sucks as a presenter. As i said the show is weak and by bringing u in and expecting you to carry the show is not working as its jus lacking that “xfactor” that you had while u were in 91.3. Hope no one is getting offended with my comments…and i have sadly stopped listening to any morning shows since this week…sigh..

  40. jalibhoy :

    Date: July 1, 2008 @ 5:10 pm

i was switching between 91.3 and 98 this morning, and I find Shake and Bake sounding better and better, the chemistry between sheikh and suzanne has definately improved and with elliot there as well, they are really not that bad

spent 5 mins on 91.3, it was boring, hossan was reduced to reading traffic and news

  41. Joe Augustin :

    Date: July 1, 2008 @ 7:50 pm

Hey there, thanks for the comments. A quick one here just to clarify…

I did traffic today, so that the other would have more room to do their stuff. So I am really a little puzzled that you would say Hossan was reduced to just traffic.

He was doing some very cool stuff today as his “Mr. Concerned-Member-Of-The-Public” character and also we had fun yarn about the fine art of complaining. Just wondering jalibhoy, what time were you listening to Power 98? If it was around the news time, I can understand why it would sound boring to you. It’s sort of the “info” break. Try us out at any other time, and I think you’ll find there’s something going on there.

Look out for Thai traffic tomorrow… :)

  42. Cookie :

    Date: July 4, 2008 @ 1:08 pm

Yes, I heard the Royal Thai Police traffic by Hossan. I had a good laugh. He is good with that. Keep the different funny accent coming, eg Jap next, Chinaman, Indian, M’sian, etc. Bring it all on.

There will be people who will like the show, there will be pple who compare with Joe & Petrina against Joe & Shareen & Hossan.

I didn’t find Hossan that bad as some did. I hv lesser expectation as a listener. I just find those who fake some stupid american culture, or some wannabe accents, and attitudes, disgusting.

Thus, the 3 of you there, being much urselves, strike a good note.

Keep adding more chemicals to ur concotion, sure an explosion will occur soon.
